Eating Well on the Go

Whether it’s a Saturday filled with kids’ sports and errands or a family vacation, avoid the temptation to settle for the nearest fast food chain or convenience store when you’re on the go. Try these simple and much better-for-you options when you’ll be away from home for a few hours, or a few days:

  • Tortilla wraps. Spread some softened cream cheese on a whole-wheat tortilla, top with deli meat and cheese, and roll up tightly. The cream cheese helps keep the insides from spilling out, and they’re easy to eat one-handed!
  • Meat ‘n’ cheese rollups. Simply wrap a slice of deli meat around a slice or cube of deli cheese. A great protein and calcium source!
  • Mini bagels. Fill with meat, cheese, or even peanut butter and jelly. Great for little hands, and easy to pack.
  • Crunchy carrot, celery, or pickle wraps. Wrap a slice of deli turkey, ham, or roast beef around a carrot or celery stick or pickle spear.
  • More ideas. Already peeled hard-boiled eggs, cut-up fruit, nutrition bars, whole-wheat pretzels and crackers, and nuts are all easy to pack up and take with.

If you’ll be on the road for a while, you’ll want to keep your foods cold. Invest in a good cooler in a size that will fit easily in your car. Use ice packs rather than loose ice to help avoid soggy food and backseat leaks. Don’t forget to keep wet wipes in the glove compartment, and keep a bag handy for wrappers and other trash.
